The Michigan Flyers' roots trace back to the 1920s — we participated in the first airmeet of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association in 1929. The club in its current form was incorporated in 1969 by a group of aerospace engineering students. The philosophy then and now is to provide quality aircraft and facilities, with a particular emphasis on education.
Today, we're a diverse group of individuals who share a common passion for flying. Stop by the office on a Saturday, and you're likely to find a group of us swapping stories over coffee, while students and veterans fly overhead. You'll find us involved at local pancake breakfast fly-ins, barbecuing outside, or tossing around a softball.
University of Michigan Affiliation
Not a Wolverine? Not a problem! Although the Flyers got started as an official University of Michigan student club, you need not be affiliated with the University to join. The Michigan football team video staff has scouted opponents' stadiums from our aircraft and many students fly with us. The truth of the matter is, the University does not have an aviation program that trains pilots. So, at the Michigan Flyers, you'll often see an EMU Eagle or a Purdue Boilermaker teaching a Wolverine to fly!
Ann Arbor Airport
The Flyers are based at the Ann Arbor Airport (KARB), where we have an office and hangars. The airport is off of Ellsworth road, a few blocks south of I-94. It offers a terrific view of downtown Ann Arbor as you climb from the 3,500 ft. concrete runway or the 2,750 ft. turf runway. The airport is open 24 hours a day, with tower services from 8am to 8pm. Get directions to the Flyers.
Unlike many rental situations, as a member of the Michigan Flyers, you are part-owner of the club's aircraft. As named insureds on the club's policy, members receive protections unavailable to most renters. Read more about the club's insurance policies.
